BISD reacts to commissioner meetings about possible takeover

Posted: Updated:
BEAUMONT -

Texas Education Commissioner Michael Williams met with several Beaumont Independent School District trustees and administrators about the possible district take-over by the Texas Education Agency.

BISD Superintendent Dr. Timothy Chargois was the first to meet with Commissioner Williams, he told 12 News after the meeting that the district is still accredited. Dr. Chargois also said he has no reason to believe that the district's accreditation will be jeopardized.

"I believe with the help of the agency, everyone coming together to help our students we'll be able to get through this and deliver a product for our children, which is a quality education," Chargois said.

Trustees Mike Neil and Thomas Neild said they agree with the TEA's findings and were eager to discuss the process with Commissioner Williams.

"I thought we were dismissive and arrogant," Neil said. "I want to make sure he understands that the entire board is not as upset as the boards president seemed to be."

However Trustee Zenobia Bush said she hopes the board stays the same.

"There are controls in place and we are working toward what's right," Bush said. "It will just be whether or not we're given the opportunity to implement those things."

Chargois said right now, the district is focusing on making sure their issues are corrected and he also hopes the commissioner will decide to keep the current board in place.

"There were several things we were asked to do so now we're trying to make sure that gets done," Chargois said. "I'm here, the boards here, we're going to move forward to correct those things we can."

Above all, Chargois said he wants the public to know that BISD students are still getting a good education.
