One in custody following armed robbery of a Beaumont restaurant

Posted: Updated:

Beaumont police have a man in custody following an armed robbery of restaurant Monday morning.

The robbery happened around 6:30 a.m. at La Salsita Restaurant located at 612 Washington Ave.  This is at the intersection of Washington Avenue and Irving Street.

A neighbor said they heard what sounded like two gunshots during the robbery.  A police spokesperson told 12News that a dog broke loose from its chain and attacked one of the officers working the robbery case. The spokesperson said police were forced to shoot the dog and this was most likely the gunshots the neighbor heard.  No shots were fired during the robbery.

Officers searched the area using a helicopter and a K-9 immediately after the robbery.  The robbery suspect was arrested shortly before 8 a.m. at 615 Lee St.

The Beaumont Police Department issued the following news release Monday morning:

On Monday, March 31, 2014 at 6:37 am, Officers responded to a robbery in progress at 612 Washington, La Salsita.

A description of the suspect was put out over the radio while an officer was already in the area of the robbery. The officer was at Sabine Pass and Lee Street when he drove up behind a person fitting the description.  The officer  attempted to stop the possible suspect and he took off running between two houses and disappeared in the back yard.  Additional officers entered into the area and set up a perimeter.  A K9 officer and his partner were called to the scene. The K9 started following the track and  went between several houses and into a vacant lot.  A dog broke free from its leash and attacked the officers conducting the track.   Officers were forced to discharge their weapons to end the attack.   The K9 officer and his partner continued to track and ended up in the 600 block of Lee street,  where the suspect was located hiding in a garage.  A loaded 9mm handgun was located with the suspect.  The money from the robbery was located in the suspect's shorts.

The armed robber is a 31 year old Beaumont man.

He was taken to the station to speak with members of the Criminal Investigations Unit and then transported to Jefferson County Correctional Facility.
The investigation is on going and in the early stages, but the suspect was booked in for Felon in Possession of a Firearm, Aggravated Robbery and Evading Detention/Arrest.
