PORT ARTHUR -

Shari Pulliam with Texas Department of Family and Protective Services told 12News that the agency is investigating the circumstances surrounding an auto-pedestrian accident that claimed the life of a 10-year-old boy.

The child is identified as Tyvone Joseph Washington, 10, of Port Arthur.

Pulliam said a 20-month old girl has also been placed out of the home as part of a safety plan.

Chief Mark Blanton told 12News that shortly after 10 p.m. Saturday a group of children ranging in age from 16 to 10-years-old were attempting to cross Highway 69 in the 8500 block of Memorial Boulevard when the accident happened.  Chief Blanton said that the 10-year-old was the last child attempting to cross when he was struck by a silver Volvo SUV.

The driver told police she had seen several people crossing the highway, but she did not see the child that she struck.

All the other boys safely made it across the highway.

Jefferson County Precinct 2 Justice of the Peace Judge Marc DeRouen pronounced Washington dead at the scene and has ordered an inquest.

According to police, the group of boys had been to Central Mall prior to the accident.
