Officials have released the name of a man who is dead following an officer-involved shooting in Port Arthur.

The deceased is identified as Eduardo Rodriguez, 19.

The incident happened around 2 p.m. Thursday in the 1400 block of Peek Avenue after officers received a call about a car in a ditch.  A police spokesperson initially said Rodriguez was attempting to carjack a driver who had his vehicle stuck in a ditch.  Officers later learned Rodriguez had crashed a previously carjacked car and was attempting to get the driver of a second vehicle to take him away from the scene.

When the first officer arrived she attempted to subdue Rodriguez, and a struggle began. The officer tried to use her stun gun on Rodriguez and it failed to stop him. Rodriguez attempted to take the officer's firearm as a backup officer arrived. The backup officer fatally shot Rodriguez.

Port Arthur Police Department Major Raymond Clark told 12News the officer who fired the shot is Officer Herschel Whiting.

Officer Whiting has been placed on administrative leave pending the outcome of an investigation. This is standard procedure.
