Orange County church group completes mobile medical clinic

Posted: Updated:

The Orange County United Methodist Men have completed a nearly year-long project, turning a storage pod into a self-contained portable medical facility.

The pod will likely be shipped to the Central American country of Belize to be used as a free walk-in clinic to help those in need.

Jerry Ashby and his fellow Methodist Men, along with volunteers from the community, have been working on the pod since last May. 10 months and nearly $15,000 later, their part of the job is finished.

"When this thing came in it was just an empty box... basically what we did was build a house inside," said Ashby. "We had some very nice donations, and a lot of support... some students from Bridge City High School came out and helped install the insulation."

With linoleum floors, air conditioning, ceiling fans, multiple electrical sockets, sinks, three partitioned exam areas and a lab room, the clinic will soon be sent to Pearland to be outfitted by the organization Christian Alliance with a dental chair and medical supplies, before heading to Belize.

"They asked where we had a desire for it to go and we said wherever it will do the most good," said Ashby.

"We've got it made here in the United States, we really do. When you look at a lot of the other countries, they have nothing," said Ronald McPherson, President of the Orange County United Methodist Men.

A dedication ceremony for the pod before it's sent to Pearland will be held this Sunday at 2 p.m. at St. Paul United Methodist Church in Bridge City.
