BEAUMONT -

According to a study by Gallup-Healthways, the Beaumont-Port Arthur area was ranked as the sixth worst area for overall well-being, out of a list of 189 communities.

The study was based on more than 500,000 interviews in which people were asked about subjects like emotional and physical health, job satisfaction, community safety and access to food, shelter and health care.

It's not the first time Southeast Texas has made the "worst" list, but this year's score of 62.2 is even lower than last years 62.5.

Locals like Jean Davis don't believe living in Southeast Texas is as bad as the study makes it sound.

"I really don't see anything negative," Davis said. "I think it's a nice place to live and people that don't like it or disagree should come check it out."

While others like B. J. Scott agree that the area could use some improving.

"I got breast cancer after moving here and I work at a hospital," Scott said. "I see other patients with cancer and I think it might be environmentally related."

On the well being journals website, Gallup's Director of Client Services Patrick Bogart stated on the website, that the study is not meant to make anyone feel bad.

"Our goal is to get leaders thinking about how they can enhance well-being," Bogart said.
