NEWTON COUNTY -

A spokesperson for the Texas Department of Public Safety said a Deweyville man was arrested following a three-car accident involving a Newton County Sheriff's Deputy.

According to the spokesperson, Larry Odom, 57, of Deweyville, was driving a 1995 Dodge truck at the time of the crash Saturday evening on Highway 87 north of Deweyville. There was also a female passenger in the vehicle at the time of the crash.

While speaking with Odom at the scene, troopers suspected that Odom was possibly intoxicated. After conducting field sobriety tests, Odom was placed under arrest. Odom was then transported to Christus Hospital St. Elizabeth in Beaumont to be medically evaluated. Once released from the hospital, Odom was transported to the Newton County Jail and charged with Intoxication Assault with Serious Bodily Injury which is a Second Degree Felony.

DPS received a report around 8:45pm about a three vehicle crash on State Highway 87 near County Road 3129 in Newton County.

According to preliminary reports, the deputy involved in the accident was responding to an emergency call and traveling northbound on a State Highway 87. There pick up truck, driven by Odom, was also traveling northbound on Highway 87 in front of the deputy. The deputy attempted to pass the pick-up truck when the truck made a left turn onto County Road 3129. The deputy's patrol car struck the turning pick up truck. Upon colliding with the truck, the deputy's vehicle turned onto its side and continued across the southbound lane of Highway 87 and struck a vehicle that was parked in a private drive. The patrol unit continued off the roadway and came to rest in a ditch.

According to DPS, two people in the pick-up truck and the deputy were transported to Christus Hospital St. Elizabeth in Beaumont. Their injuries are not known at this time. The occupant of the parked vehicle was not injured.

An emergency worker on the scene told 12News it appears the injuries were not life threatening.
