City of Orange's 'Art in the Park' successful at new venue

Posted: Updated:

131 vendors, from painters to craftsmen, eagerly wait for March to roll around every year for the City of Orange's 'Art in the Park' festival.

The one day event showcases the work of extremely talented local artists.

But unlike the past 11 years, the festival was not held at Stark Park on Green Avenue. This year the city decided to move it to the grounds at the new Riverfront Boardwalk and Pavilion not far from the park.

"We just wanted to highlight the new city attraction... we really thought it would be a great venue along the river, and the pavilion was a great location to have the bands play," said Orange Convention and Visitors Bureau Director Taylor Warner.

It's a welcome change for Orange artist Delle Bates, who lives about a football field's length away from the boardwalk. But it's not just the proximity he enjoys.

"I like the openness of it, we have the music that everybody can hear... and it's spread out well and I think we could actually grow here," said Bates.

"We're surprised and happy with the turnout, since this is the first year we're doing it over here, and I think everyone's really enjoying it," said Warner.

The boardwalk and pavilion was a $6.2 million project that was completed last summer.
