Family grieves over three siblings death, fourth sibling in custody

Joe Frederick Hawkins, 26, is now in custody after he opened fire on his 21-year-oldgirlfriend and three older siblings.

The three siblings Hawkins isaccused with killing have been identified as Darrel Hawkins, 34, Reshowna "Danielle" Hawkins, 30,  and Anthony Ray Hawkins, 33.

Police said Anthony and Danielle were pronounced dead at thescene. Darrel Hawkins later died at Christus Hospital St. Elizabeth. Joe Hawkins' girlfriend is in the hospital in stable condition.

Family members said theirmother, Jessica Hawkins, ran behind the house and across the street whenshe heard the gun shots, to the home of her cousin Krishara Bennett.

Bennett said Jessica is still in shock and hasn't come to terms with losing three of her children,  while anotheris in custody. Bennett said she will remember her cousins as kind, genuine people.

"We all just grewup as a tight family," Bennett said. "You would have never thought that something like thiswould happen with brothers and sisters."

Bennett also said despiterumors, this was a bad case of sibling rivalry and they have no reasonto believe drugs were involved.

"It's a lot ofassumptions that are being made right now as far as Joe being on drugs or usingdrugs," she said, "it's no drugs involved."

The victims leave behind atotal of 14 children between them, another challenge the family will have to face.

"They're justlooking for the right words to be able to tell the children," Bennett said. 

The family said they aregrateful for those who have shown support, but right now the familyis still in shock and are trying to cope the best they can.

"[We're coping] through prayerand with open arms to embrace us all because we're all suffering a great loss," she said.

The children are currently with their surviving parents. Family members areworking to get a fundraiser set up for them and to cover funeralexpenses, but those plans have not been finalized yet.
