Another Orange County traffic stop ends with drug arrests

Orange County sheriff's deputies have made more drug arrests following a traffic stop.

On Wednesday, 12News reported (CLICK HERE FOR STORY) that a traffic stop on Tuesday led to the arrest of two men found with methamphetamine during a traffic stop on S. Lutcher Drive.

Around 11 p.m. Wednesday a detective with the Orange County Special Services Division was driving west on the Interstate 10 service road near Martin Luther King Jr. Drive when he saw a Chevrolet Avalanche going the same direction swerve. The deputy said the driver failed to maintain a single lane of travel.

The detective stopped the Avalanche for the traffic violation and talked to the driver and passenger.

The detective searched the Avalanche and found a liquid substance in two separate baby bottles hidden within the center console. Due to the Detective's past training and experience, he believed the substance to be Codeine. The detective also found a 9mm semi-automatic firearm located in plain view.

The driver, identified by the Sheriff's Office as Desmond Spears, 29, of Orange, and a passenger identified as Darrell Powell, 32, also of Orange, were arrested and taken to the Orange County jail.

Spears and Powell were charged with possession of a controlled substance, a 1st Degree Felony. Spears was also charged with unlawfully carrying of a weapon Class A misdemeanor. It was discovered that Darrell Powell was a previously convicted felon, therefore he was charged with felon in possession of a firearm, a 3rd degree felony.

Orange County Pct. 1 Justice of the Peace Judge David Peck arraigned both men Thursday morning.

Spears had bond amounts totaling $42,000. Powell had bond amounts totaling $60,000.
