An accident involving a tractor-trailer and a pickup sent a Bridge City man to the hospital Thursday morning.

According to Department of Public Safety Trooper Stephanie Davis, the accident happened around 7 a.m. on State Highway 73 near State Highway 124.

Trooper Davis said a 2003 International tractor semi-trailer was going west on Highway 73 in the inside lane. The driver of a 2012 Dodge truck towing several cars was also traveling westbound on Highway 73 when the driver made an unsafe lane change from the outside lane to the inside lane of Highway 73. In order to avoid a collision, the driver of the 2003 International truck tractor made an evasive action to the left. As the driver of the 2003 International truck tractor made the evasive action, his vehicle struck the Dodge truck. The 2003 International truck tractor continued into the median and into the eastbound traffic lanes of Highway 73. The momentum of the impact caused the 2003 International truck tractor to overturn. A local HazMat team was dispatched to the crash scene after the truck tractor began to leak diesel fuel from the saddlebags.

The driver of the 2003 International truck tractor, identified as Joseph Flannigan, of Bridge City, was taken by ambulance to Christus Hospital St. Elizabeth in Beaumont with minor injuries.

The driver of the 2012 Dodge pickup truck, Clinton Page of LaPorte, was not injured.

Page was cited for changed lanes when unsafe.

The 2003 International truck tractor was loaded with roofing and window materials.

As of 10 a.m. Thursday, the Texas Department of Transportation has Highway 73 closed at the crash location. The highway will remain closed until the roadway is clear of all debris and is safe for travel.

Motorists should expect the highway to remain closed for the next 2-3 hours.
