Meeting planned to create SETX marijuana advocacy chapter

Posted: Updated:

A meeting is scheduled for Saturday, organizers hope to establish a group to support non-profit organization NORML or National Organization for the Reform of Marijuana Laws.

The effort is being led by two men. Corey Mendes and Royce Abrego say adding a NORML chapter in Southeast Texas would help better inform the public on marijuana laws in the state.

It would be a preliminary meeting according to the two since there is no official chapter. The group will have to pick five qualified people to make up a board.

Wednesday a port acres man shared his story with 12News about how marijuana has helped him deal with epilepsy.

Jeremy Bourque says he grew his own plants in secret for 14 years before authorities seized them.

"I was able to wing myself off all seizure medicine and just use cannabis twice a day, two or three hits a day, to knock off all symptoms and sleep good at night and not have a seizure," Bourque said.

The meeting is planned for Saturday at Logon Café in Beaumont at 6 p.m. Mendes invites all supporters and non-supporters of legalization to attend.
