Authorities release name of teenager who drowned at Village Creek

Posted: Updated:

Lumberton Police Chief Danny Sullins told 12News Tuesday evening that an 18-year-old drowned at Village Creek State Park.

The teen is identified as Terumah Ams of Houston.

Sullins says Ams was one of eight Houston-area charter school students volunteering in Lumberton during their Spring Break.

They are students at Yes Prep School, and as part of a community service project they were clearing trails at the state park.

They went swimming in the creek Tuesday afternoon, and that's when Ams went under and did not resurface.

Police received the call at 4:25 p.m., and the teen's body was recovered just before 6 p.m.

Sullins describes the group of boys as "very nice young men", and he says this is a real tragedy.

He says several area fire departments were involved in the recovery of the Ams' body.

His body was taken to the Jefferson County Morgue, and an autopsy has been ordered.
