Christus Hospital St. Elizabeth accused of overcharging Medicare

Posted:

The office of the Inspector General is accusing Christus Hospital St. Elizabeth in Beaumont of overcharging Medicare. It says the hospital should reimburse Medicare $1,319,746 .

The findings are based on a two-and-a-half year review of the hospital for the Department of Health and Human services.  That review took place between January 1, 2010 and June 30, 2012.

Investigators took a random sample of 100 medical claims to review. They involved short in-patient stays. Of those 100, investigators found the hospital did not comply with Medicare requirements in 84 claims.

They say St. E's incorrectly billed Medicare Part A for inpatient stays that should have been outpatient.

The review found that in patient admission wasn't medically necessary for those patients.

Christus Hospital St. Elizabeth issued a statement saying it has working closely with the Office of Inspector General.

The statement goes on to say, "The issues currently under review do not question the quality or appropriateness of care we provide to our patients.end quote. Return to index of stories."

Christus Health issued the following statement in response

CHRISTUS Health is working closely with the Office of Inspector General (OIG) in its Medicare Compliance Review. The issues currently under review do not question the quality or appropriateness of care we provide to our patients; rather, they enquire whether certain services should have been billed as outpatient services rather than as inpatient services.

We at CHRISTUS Health will continue to work with the government, our community, our caregivers and our patients to continually improve our processes and to ensure that we are always providing the highest quality of care to all those we are privileged to serve.
