City of Port Arthur seeks state funds to demolish former water treatment plant

12News has an update to the report we aired Monday night concerning the old Port Arthur water treatment plant on 19th street off of Savannah Avenue.

Neighbors complained that it is not only an eyesore, but also a danger.  12News found the building unlocked and once inside discovered numerous hazards.

Acting city manager John Comeaux responded Tuesday to our report.  He said the city has had trouble keeping the building secured because of vandals and thieves who target the copper inside.  But Comeaux said the building was re-secured and locked Tuesday and no trespassing signs are going up.

He also said police will increase patrols in the area.

Comeaux said Port Arthur is cash-strapped, but it has applied for a state grant to help demolish the building.

He said the city should learn if it gets it in the next three to six months.
