Dominique Edwards earns 2nd-team honors

BEAUMONT, Texas – Lamar University senior Gia Ayers is a first-team selection on the Southland Conference All-Conference Women's Basketball Team it was announced today.

The 5-foot-7 guard from Bryan, Texas, leads Lamar in scoring at 16.1 points per game and leads the Southland Conference in assists, averaging 5.5 per game. She ramped up her production in conference games, averaging 17.7 points and 6.0 assists per game.

Ayers capped off the regular season in fine style Saturday night, pouring in a career-high 39 points and adding 10 assists as the Lady Cardinals wrapped up the top seed in this week's Southland Conference Tournament with a 92-77 win over Southeastern Louisiana on Senior Night.

Ayers, who was tied for the conference lead in steals in SLC action at 2.2 per game, was also named to the conference's all-defensive team.

"We knew Gia was one of the best players in the conference," Lamar coach Robin Harmony said of Ayers. "She is one of the top five guards I have ever coached, and one of the best to ever play at Lamar. More importantly, she is a great person. I am so happy for her."

Junior forward Dominique Edwards (Grand Prairie, Texas) was named a second-team All-Southland Conference performer. Edwards was second on Lamar in scoring, averaging 15.1 points per game. Edwards led Lamar in rebounding at 8.2 per game.

"Dom put up good numbers for us this season," Harmony said. "With so many good players in this league, it's hard to earn all-conference honors. To have two players honored is tremendous."

The Lady Cardinals (18-11 overall, 13-5 Southland) earned a bye into the Southland Conference Tournament semifinals in Katy, Texas. Lamar will play at noon Saturday against Oral Roberts, Nicholls or Northwestern State. The championship game is noon Sunday. The tournament winner receives an automatic berth into the NCAA Tournament.

As the No. 1 seed in the conference, Lamar will receive an automatic bid to the WNIT if it does not go to the NCAA Tournament.

"This is the time when we need everybody to step up their game," Harmony said. "This is what you work hard for all season."
