Beaumont's only abortion clinic is closing

Posted: Updated:

Whole Woman's Health has announced that its Beaumont abortion clinic is one of two in Texas that will close its doors this week.

The other one is in the Rio Grande Valley city of McAllen, in South Texas.

Whole Woman's Health blames the latest Texas abortion law for its closing. House Bill 2, which passed in 2013, requires any abortion provider in Texas to have admitting privileges at a local hospital. It also requires abortion clinics to meet the minimum standards of Ambulatory Surgical Centers (ASC's,) by September 2014.

Pro-Life advocate Eileen Romano said she feels it's a step in the right direction.

"Women tend to rush into this decision without being fully aware of the consequences," Romano said.

Whole Woman's Health Clinical Services Director, Marva Sadler, said the law doesn't prevent the need for abortion. She also said in Rio Grande Valley, where the other clinic closed, they've seen an increase of women attempting to end pregnancies on their own.

"We have seen an increase in women going to Mexico or even flea markets to get medications to self induce in those areas," Sadler said. "They haven't had to do that here in Beaumont because we've been here but as we leave I'm sure we will see an up rise of that."

Democratic gubernatorial candidate and state senator, Wendy Davis filibustered for 11 hours last year, hoping to prevent the legislation from passing HB2, and she was initially successful.

Shortly after that, Governor Rick Perry called for a special session, during which the law was passed.

The Beaumont clinic is located on North 18th Street.
