Local runner to help fight cancer at Boston Marathon

Posted: Updated:

Larry West is an ultra marathon runner who motivates others from start to finish. But, he's taking that drive on step further to Boston to run the Boston marathon and raise money for the program, "Cops for Kids with Cancer."

West ran Beaumont's first Gusher Marathon and encountered a course error; running 28 miles instead of 26. He turned a negative into a positive and pushed forward.

"I'm wanting to push those limits to see what the human body is capable of if you will," said West.

He now runs up to four marathons a year and just finished his 3rd 100-miler. Now, others come to him for advice.

"I learned that I may not be the fasted. But, I'm able to go from now until tomorrow non-stop and I wanted to do that for somebody more than myself," he said.

He cheers everyone on along the course and always finishes last at the Gusher Marathon, purposely.

"I want somebody to look at those finish results and know they didn't finish last. So, along the way I just push people. I encourage them. I motivate them that you can do this," he said.

After this weekend's race, he's headed to run the Boston Marathon for the law enforcement charity "Cops for Kids with Cancer."

The charity has donated over $1-million to 200 families in the last four years.
