Record breaking winter storm causes outages and closures

Posted: Updated:

Spring is within reach but winter refused to give up Tuesday as a cold spell made its way to Southeast Texas, leading to canceled schools and fallen frozen trees.

The Southeast Texas area hit the hardest was southern Jasper County and northern Hardin County where neighbors woke up to a layer of ice on anything above ground and fallen trees in roadways and yards.

It's a week before spring break begins for many school districts, but several campuses got off to a late start. Buna ISD was forced to close completely due to power outages.

Silsbee High School decided to start the day at its normal time, but lost power for about an hour Tuesday morning.

Michael Carson owns a business on FM 1122 in Silsbee. He said the cold blasts have affected a number of his customers.

"This is probably the first year since I've lived here in ten years, it's been this much ice and cold all at the same time," he said.

March seems late for freezing rain, but it's not unknown for this time of year. According to 12 News Meteorologist Patrick Vaughn, what's unusual is that this area has seen icy weather four times this season and Tuesday set a record for coldest day on record in March.

Peggy Perry of Buna, said she was without power for most of the day.

"It's horrible I can't believe it's been like this so many times," she said. "Our electricity is out and it's been out since about 6:30 this morning."

With the Red Bud Festival set to begin Friday, Mar. 7 in Buna and spring break starting next week for most schools, locals are hoping winter has made its final appearance this season.
