Revelers run to police officer's aid

Posted: Updated:

The Mardi Gras of Southeast Texas celebration has officially come to an end at least until next year.

Gates closed at 8 p.m. Sunday.
This was the 21st annual event and organizers say it was another major success. Port Arthur Police are reporting only four arrests this year.

Police Chief Mark Blanton says the most serious arrest involved a man from out of state who assaulted of a police officer.

Chief Blanton says an officer tried to calm the suspect down when the man became combative.

Chief Blanton says the suspect took a swing at the officer before revelers stepped in to help the officer.

They helped subdue the suspect and he was taken into custody. Assault of a public servant is a third degree felony. The officer did not need medical attention.

Chief Blanton says alcohol played a role in the suspects behavior. The other three arrests over the weekend were minor offenses like disorderly conduct and public intoxication.
