Kilgore police chief on paid leave following fatal shooting

A former Jasper police chief has been put on paid leave following a fatal shooting he was involved in this week in Kilgore.

Todd Hunter, now the chief in Kilgore, and three other lawmen were given time off after shooting 37-year-old Randy Vinson to death Tuesday.

Vinson shot his sister-in-law to death and then exchanged automatic weapons fire with police officers and a deputy.

Authorities believe he was angry over being asked to leave the victim's home because of a drug problem.

Assistant Kilgore Police Chief Roman Roberson was appointed by Kilgore City Manager Scott Sellers to assume leadership of the department in Hunter's absence.

Roberson said Thursday that the officers were faced with a tough situation and did what their training taught them to do.

The officers were placed on paid leave per each department's policy.
