Former pro fighter and Port Arthur native Wilford Scypion passes away at 55

One of Port Arthur's famous sons has passed away.

Family members confirm to 12News Wilford "Pop-Pee The Champ" Scypion died Thursday at the age of 55.

Scypion grew up in Port Arthur and fought his way up the ranks. He was the 1978 Golden Gloves Middleweight national champion.

He started his professional career 15-0 and eventually went on to fight for the middleweight championship in February 1983 where he fought "Marvelous" Marvin Hagler in Providence, RI. Scypion was knocked out in the fourth round.

He retired in 1991 with 32 wins, 24 by knockout, and 9 losses.  

His family tells 12News Scypion died from complications of pneumonia at a Port Arthur hospital.

Funeral arrangements are pending.
