Officials release name of man killed in exchange of gunfire with lawmen


A spokesperson for the Orange County Sheriff's Office has identified the man who was killed in an exchange of gunfire with lawmen Tuesday as Morris Ray Bonnette, 64, of Vidor.

Bonnette was shot and killed by law enforcement authorities when they attempted to serve a warrant.

Deputy Clint Hodgkinson said the U.S. Marshall's Office was assisting Orange County sheriff's deputies serve a warrant on Bonnette around 5:15 p.m. Tuesday at a home in the 800 block of FM 1131.  This is northwest of Vidor. 

Hodgkinson said Bonnette was armed and gunfire was exchanged during an attempt to take him into custody. 

Bonnette was declared dead on scene.

No law enforcement officers were injured in the shooting.

The Texas Rangers are investigating the shooting.
