Spanish speaking students fall short in Beaumont I.S.D.

Posted:

On January 29, Beaumont I.S.D. sent a letter to Spanish speaking parents.

"When I first received this letter I said, 'If my kids are in that position of possibly not reaching standards it worries me," Cecilia Rodriguez told 12News.

She didn't know what to make of it.

"What worries me the most, is that my kids are not receiving the education that they need. That we ,as parents, think they are getting," Rodriguez said.

The BISD was required to send a letter to parents of limited English Proficient Students notifying them the district failed to meet Annual Measurable Achievement Objectives or AMAO's.

Translated, it says in December the Texas Education Agency notified the district that it did not meet one or more objectives for English Language Learning students or ELL for short.

The district says in the subject of Writing, 48 percent of Spanish speaking students met standard and in Social Studies 46 percent met the standard

Both are just short of the district's required standard of 50 percent.

As for graduation target, the required minimum is 78 percent. But the district was just under that standard at 75.8 percent graduation rate for ELL students.

Assistant Superintendent Dr. Dwaine Augustine says the district has formulated a "Continuous Improvement Plan."

It's a plan to help Spanish speaking students meet standard and it's already been sent to the TEA.
One focus area will be staff development. BISD says it fell short when it came to having staff that could communicate with and teach English to Spanish speaking students.

Considering the data Rodriguez hopes BISD puts pressure on it's teachers.

"Invest more in preparing teachers so they can better understand our children," she said.
