Students report attempted abduction at Sallie Curtis

Posted: Updated:
BEAUMONT -

Parents of Sallie Curtis Elementary School were on edge after learning about what they called an attempted abduction.

First grader Addie Streeper said a woman tried luring them into her vehicle during recess on Friday Feb. 21.

"We were playing by the tree, by the street and then a car came and waved for my friends to come," she said. "They almost went to her, but then they ran off and we told the teacher after that."

The children said the woman was driving a dark gray sedan and said she did not speak to them, but motioned for them to come to her car. The children described the driver as an African American woman in her forties.

Addie's mom , Sarah Streeper, said she was surprised that the school did not inform them the day this happened.

"The only reason I knew about it was my daughter came home and told me and I went on the school Facebook page where there was parents talking about it," she said. "They could have at a least sent out an automated message letting us know to look out for this lady."

That Facebook group is called Sallie Curtis Parent Chat and it's how parents have been communicating about the incident.

Beaumont Independent School District said the principal at Sallie Curtis planned to send out an automated message Monday evening informing parents about what happened on Friday.

The BISD Police Department said that students, teachers and parents should take precautions by altering someone when they spot unusual activity on or near campus.

They also said unusual vehicle reports aren't rare, but that the reports don't often come from children.

Parents said they have a conference planned for Wednesday at 1 p.m.
