Lamar teaching students to brew beer

Posted: Updated:

Lamar University is now teaching students how to brew beer.

The new class is being taught by Doctor Christopher Martin, an Associate Professor of Chemistry.

He received a home brewing kit as a gift and quickly decided to take his brewing from his home to the classroom.

"They learn what the yeast is actually doing, what are the sugars, and why do you add things at different times," said Dr. Martin.

This is the first semester for the class which already sits about 30 students.

It's getting rave reviews and Martin hopes to offer the class each semester in the future.

Most students 12News talked to say they've tried home brewing in the past and this class helps them learn what all it takes to make beer.

There is no lab at Lamar for brewing beer so students can take a volunteer trip to Houston where a lab is offered.
