Teacher speaks out against accused sex offender

Posted: Updated:

Joshua McDonald is a former Bridge City youth minister accused of sexually assaulting two girls under the age of 17, over a two year period.

A former teacher is speaking out on behalf of one of those girls, and she's urging the community to back off from bashing her.

The former teacher did not want to be identified.

She said for the past three years, she feels like she's been one of three people against the world.

The other is a fellow ex-teacher and the third person is one the teenaged girl, who police say was a victim of McDonald's.

The teacher said the girl confided in her and the other teacher.  She told them she had just turned 15, when McDonald began targeting her.  The two had met at First Baptist Church in Bridge City where McDonald worked.

The teacher told 12News, "Her abuser kind of made friends with many people at the school through his position in the community, and he did a lot of damage to her reputation prior to any of this coming out."

The teachers say McDonald spread the word that the girl was destructive and was a liar, who could not be trusted.

They say many people wrote the girl off, but not them.

The teachers consider the girl a hero.

One told us, "It's pretty clear he wouldn't have just stopped, he had to be stopped, and if it wasn't for her, who knows how many more victims we would have been looking at down the road."

McDonald is currently out on bond.  Orange County District Attorney John Kimbrough says his first appearance in court will likely be in two months.

We called McDonald's lawyer, but an assistant told us they had no comment at this time.
