Homeless man escapes death in a dump truck

Posted: Updated:

The City of Port Arthur is urging the homeless to find proper shelter during cold nights and is asking for the public's help.

This, after a homeless man nearly found himself crushed in the back of a city garbage truck.

The man apparently found shelter from Tuesday night's rain and cold in an IHOP dumpster.

A trash collector collected the trash around 7 a.m. Tuesday, unknowingly throwing the homeless man in the back of his garbage truck.

Then after collecting another restaurant's trash he began compacting the load.

That's when he heard the homeless man started screaming struggling to climb out of the truck.

"If there are any homeless people around we would like the public to direct them to the Port Cities Rescue Mission and several churches that will take them in as well," City Councilman Kerry Thomas said.

Wednesday just happened to be the Port Cities Rescue Mission's 30th Anniversary .

With more than a dozen different facilities including apartment complexes and rehab centers, Executive Director Ken Hill calls it one of the biggest secrets in the City of Port Arthur.

It has an open door policy when weather calls for it.

"You need to get off these streets. We don't want to see you out in the cold and hungry. Come on in," Hill said.
