Beaumont dads bond together to be role models at school

Posted: Updated:

At Sallie Curtis elementary in Beaumont, the dads are creating something completely original called "Watch D.O.G.S.".

D.O.G.S. stands for dads of great students.

The organization is a way for the fathers to be role models for all students during school hours.

On some mornings, you will see dads greeting students as they walk in the front door at school.

During lunch, you will see the dads eating with the students. They also spend time with them during class and help them with their school work.

"We come to the school and we interact with the children. We get to read to them in the library. We give them high fives at lunch time. We get to hand out stickers at lunch," said David Janecek.

Russell Miller is also in the group. He's originally from out of state and thinks the success of this organization is spreading.

"I told my people back in Georgia about what this program is and what it does for kids and how fun it is for the parents. I love it," he said.

It's at school where dads get the chance to portray a positive fatherly image to not only their own children but to others who aren't so fortunate.

"You can provide that guidance and interact with them and they really love that," said Janecek.

These dads encourage other dads at other schools to form a similar group to become role models not only at home but also at school.
