UPDATE: Port Arthur Police identify man who died in weekend accident

A Port Arthur Police Department spokesperson has identified Mikel Anderson, 26, from Port Arthur, as the man who died after the car he was driving went into the canal off Memorial Boulevard and Highway 73 under the exit ramp.

Police say they responded to a call late Sunday afternoon about a submerged car in the canal.

When they arrived, witnesses said there was someone in the car.
At least one person had tried unsuccessfully to rescue Anderson.

Port Arthur firefighters were able to get him out of the car and both the fire department and EMS personnel began performing CPR.

Anderson was then transported to the Medical Center of Southeast Texas where he was pronounced dead.

An autopsy has been ordered.

It has not been determined why the vehicle entered the water.
