VIDOR -

UPDATE: 12News has learned the man accused of causing a traffic accident that claimed the life of Alexandria Bertrand, 16, of Vidor, is now in custody at the Jefferson County Jail.

Kelvin Lee Roy, 32 of Beaumont was booked around 12:30pm Sunday. According the Jail Intake Officer, Roy is being held for marijuana possession with a bond of $250.

Chief Dave Shows with the Vidor Police Department says there is no warrant for Roy's arrest for the fatal accident. Evidence is being gathered and analyzed to support a warrant according to Chief Shows.

The Jail Intake Officer also tells 12News that Roy is being held on a mental health watch and refuses to answer any questions.

Chief Shows told 12News that Alexandria Nicole Bertrand, 16, of Vidor passed away at 2:45 p.m. Saturday from injuries she received in an accident. Bertrand was a student at Vidor High School.

According to police, three people were sent to the hospital after two cars collided Friday around 9:45 p.m. at the corner of S. Main Street and Highway 90.

An officer on the scene said a white Mercury Sable and a Honda minivan were southbound on S. Main. He said the minivan was rear-ended by the driver of the Sable that was speeding. The officer said the Sable was going so fast, it cleared the railroad tracks and actually sheared off the top of the minivan.  The Sable rolled numerous times.

Vidor Police Chief Dave Shows told 12News that the minivan was stopped at a red light just over the train tracks. Shows says Bertrand, sitting in the passenger seat, was ejected from the minivan. Shows says as far as he knows, the driver of the minivan was Bertrand's mother, April Bertrand. Shows says she suffered minor injuries.

The driver of the Sable is identified as Kelvin Lee Roy, 32, of Beaumont. As of Saturday afternoon, Chief Shows says Roy was in intensive care at a Beaumont hospital.

Chief Shows also says that there was evidence found at the scene that indicates intoxication was a factor in the accident.
