Orange County officials are investigating a fatal accident that happened around  10:30 a.m. Friday on Highway 87 near Owens-Illinois Road.

Department of Public Safety Trooper Stephanie Davis has identified the deceased as Nicholas Franck, 36, of Orange.

Trooper Davis said Franck was driving a 2009 Ford Mustang northbound on Highway 87 when he veered off the road to the East for an unknown reason. The Mustang hit a railroad crossing guard pole and went airborne.  As the vehicle landed, it then struck a culvert which sent the Mustang airborne again.  It came to rest in the eastbound ditch of Highway 87.

Franck was pronounced dead at the scene by Orange County Precinct 1 Justice of the Peace Judge David Peck.

An investigation into the accident is ongoing.
