Alfred Wright case turned over to Texas Attorney General

Posted: Updated:

The Alfred Wright death investigation case is now in the hands of the Texas Attorney General.

In a press release sent out Wednesday, Sabine County District Attorney J. Kevin Dutton writes:

I am issuing this press release to inform the public of my office's position on the Alfred Wright case.

It is my understanding that the investigation by the Texas Rangers is substantially complete. In order to clarify many issues being publicized, I hereby authorize the Texas Rangers to release all materials and information found in their investigation to date.

My office welcomes the investigation by the Justice Department as there are serious allegations being made that need to be resolved.

Due to the allegations against the sheriff, and to avoid any appearance of impropriety, I have been requested, and have agreed to turn this case over to the Texas Attorney General's Office. I have requested that that office handle all further investigations, and/or prosecutions concerning the Alfred Wright case. Any further questions regarding this matter should be directed to the Texas Rangers or the Attorney General's Office.

Wright's body was found in Sabine County on November 25, nearly three weeks after being reported missing by his family. The official autopsy ruled Wright's death was caused by a combination of cocaine, methamphetamine, and amphetamine in his system. Wright's family believes he was murdered, and have accused Sabine County Sheriff Tom Maddox of participating in a cover-up.
