More changes for the Jefferson County District Attorney's Office

12News has learned that Jefferson County Assistant District Attorney Tom Rugg has retired effective Friday.

Rugg's retirement is the latest change to be announced for the DA's office since the appointment of Cory Crenshaw to replace Tom Maness as District Attorney.

Maness retired last month.

Mr. Rugg issued the following statement Friday afternoon:

Today I announced my decision to retire from the Jefferson County Criminal District Attorney's Office effective immediately. The decision that I made is the right decision at this time for me and my family. It has been a distinct honor to have served the citizens of Jefferson County in positions dedicated to public service and motivated by the single desire to do justice without improper influence by noisy, self-appointed political pundits or those whose selfish interests in authoritative control overwhelms any desire for public good. I hope that my service has been more beneficial to those I have served than it has been to me and mine. But rest assured that I owe a great debt of gratitude to those who have placed such faith in my God-given abilities as to allow me to use them in this endeavor. I am not retiring from my labor and hope to return to public service in the not so distant future.

Earlier this week, Maness' longtime first assistant Ed Shettle announced his retirement effective February 28. Assistant D.A. Pat Knauth has been promoted to Shettle's spot.

Courthouse sources earlier this week told 12News that Rugg, who's running for the 58th district court, will be let go. We contacted Rugg Wednesday who did not confirm the change at that time.
