Big changes coming to Beaumont's district attorney's office

BEAUMONT -

A major change was announced at the Jefferson County District Attorney's office Wednesday afternoon.

The announcement came  two days after Cory Crenshaw was appointed by Texas Governor Rick Perry as the county's new D.A.

Crenshaw is replacing Tom Maness, who retired last month.

Wednesday, Maness' longtime first assistant Ed Shettle announced his retirement effective February 28.  Assistant D.A. Pat Knauth has been promoted to Shettle's spot.

Shettle has been with the office for more than 25 years.  He is known for his prosecution of two Beaumont police officers accused of beating Derrick Newman during a traffic stop and also for prosecuting Jefferson County courthouse shooter Bartholomew Granger.

Courthouse sources have also told 12News that Assistant District Attorney Tom Rugg, who's running for the 58th district court, will be let go.

We contacted Rugg, and he told us, "I continue to be employed by the district attorney's office, and am not aware of any changes to my job assignment."

When we asked Crenshaw about Rugg, he told us he was not commenting.
