Community rallies around Baby Olivia

Posted: Updated:

Around 400 people rallied around the family of baby Olivia Coats Sunday at a benefit in Orange County.

Olivia Coats died New Years Day after complications during birth. Her parents say forceps used during delivery crushed Olivia's skull and severed her spine. She was born at the Medical Center of Southeast Texas and died four days later at a Houston hospital.

The community came to help Olivia's parents pay for medical expenses.  A benefit was held at the Orangefield fire department where barbecue plates were sold along with a raffle and auction. All items were donated by local businesses.

Olivia's parents are hoping to pass a law called "Olivia's Law" which would ban forceps used in deliveries. They have hired the Walter Umphrey Law Firm for representation.
