Lamar softball picked 6th by SLC coaches

Posted: Updated:

BEAUMONT, Texas –The Lamar University softball team isn't going to catch anybody by surprise this season.

After being picked to finish last in their first season of competition since 1987, the Lady Cardinals posted a fifth-place finish in the Southland Conference last spring, securing a berth in the Southland Conference Tournament. This spring, Lamar is picked to finish sixth by the conference's coaches and fifth by the Southland's sports information directors. Northwestern State was the top pick of the SLC coaches, while McNeese State was tabbed as the top team by the sports information directors.

"We're not going to sneak up on anybody this year." Lamar coach Holly Bruder said. "Last season, we definitely opened some eyes in the conference. Every team will be prepared for us this season."

The Lady Cardinals, who went 24-33 overall last season, including a 14-13 mark in the Southland Conference, return all of their starters from last year. That list includes senior center fielder Candyce Carter, who hit .339 last season; and sophomore first baseman Ashley McDowell, who belted a school-record 12 home runs.

Lamar returns its top two pitchers from last spring. Senior left-hander Shannon Millman (17-16, 4.30) and senior right-hander Tina Schulz (5-13, 5.03) will be counted on heavily again this spring.

The Lady Cardinals open their season Feb. 8 with a doubleheader at UTSA. Lamar starts conference play with its home opener on March 8 as Southeastern Louisiana comes in for a double header.

All of Lamar's games will be played at Ford Park off of I-10 in Beaumont. For ticket information, call (409) 880-1715, or visit www.LamarCardinals.com.

The Southland Conference Tournament is scheduled for May 8-10 in Hammond, La.
