Others to be questioned for money missing from Crystal Beach Volunteer Fire Department

Posted: Updated:
CRYSTAL BEACH -

The former chief of the Crystal Beach Volunteer Fire Department faces accusations of swindling money that has crippled the agency, according to our affiliate KPRC in Houston,

There are questions about whether more people could become the target of the investigation.

In November, the fire department's finances didn't add up. Their fire chief was questioned, and just Thursday, voted out of his position. The Crystal Beach VFD has elected a new chief.

The accused former chief says the allegations against him are hard to swallow and that he didn't take the money.

KPRC Reporter Robert Arnold talked to fire chief David Loop on the phone. He wouldn't comment, other than that he is aware questions are being asked.

The Galveston county Sheriff's office confirmed the ongoing investigation and said no charges have been filed but wouldn't talk specifics.

The missing money is roughly $100,000 and would allow the fire department to buy, repair and replace gear.

Their equipment is old and breaks down and they're short on air packs.

The money could almost buy them a new base-model fire truck.

Crystal Beach VFD Battalion Chief Anthony Scopel said, "It affects us the same way it does them. They've lost some of their protection, we've lost some of our safety."

More than 80-percent of the fire department's money comes from donations and barbecue fundraisers made directly from the people who trust them with their homes and their lives.
