Lamar State preps for Coastal Bend

Seahawks come home for conference game vs. Coastal Bend

After a tough two-point loss to NJCAA Region XIV foe San Jacinto on Saturday, the Lamar State College-Port Arthur Seahawks are looking to get back on track with a game against Coastal Bend College tonight in the Carl Parker Center.

The Hawks, who are 15-4 overall and 5-3 in league play, came back from as many as 15 points down in the first half to put the pressure on the Ravens on Saturday, but eventually left with a 95-93 loss. The Seahawks struggled from the field early and lost the battle on the boards after being out-rebounded 52-35. In the end, the Hawks find themselves looking for a resurrection. That could happen tonight when Coastal Bend makes the long-distance trip from Beeville for a 7 p.m. tipoff.

In spite of starting the season with a 6-1 mark, the Cougars are 7-10 overall this season, going winless in nine Region XIV games to put them firmly in last place in the South Zone.

The Coogs are led by Trey Porter, a sophomore guard who is scoring 16.6 points a game. Tony Kimbro is hitting for 9.9 points and a team-high 11.6 rebounds a game, while Darius Dawkins is scoring 9.3 points and 8.1 rebounds a game.

By comparison, the Hawks are led by the region's top scorer, sophomore guard Tre Bennett, who is scoring 21.0 points a game for the season and 21.5 in conference play. He leads the team in assists with 4.5 a game.

Jamal Shabazz, a sophomore forward, is scoring 15.4 points a game, while freshman guard JoJo Mooring is good for 14.3 points a game. D.J. Blanks, a sophomore transfer, is scoring 12.2 points and sophomore center is hitting for 10.9 points a game. Sophomore Ivan Jelencic leads the team with 8.6 rebounds with Allen pulling down 7.4 boards a game. Allen is still leading the nation in blocked shot average with 5.7 a game.

Tonight's game is "Wear Your Pink" night at the Parker Center as coaches and players from both teams, along with fans, work to bring awareness to fighting cancer. For a $30 donation at the door, fans will receive a pink "Coaches vs. Cancer" t-shirt and four tickets to the game. Additional t-shirts are available for $15 each.

The pink special edition Coaches vs. Cancer warm-up tops for Lamar State-Port Arthur are being provided by the Seahawks' uniform vendor, Moneyball.
