Pleasure Island golf course opening delayed by wild hogs

Posted: Updated:

At the Palms at Pleasure Island Golf Course in Port Arthur, the grass has been mowed and the dead shrubbery has been removed, but there's still a lot of work left to be done before its ready to be opened for public use.

The Palms was largely destroyed by Hurricane Ike in 2008 and left unattended for years, but Kevin Johnson with the port arthur renaissance group has been working for the past year to get it back up and running... A roughly one million dollar project paid for entirely by private investors.
"We've probably hauled off somewhere in the neighborhood of about 140 truckloads of debris," Johnson told 12News Tuesday.

Johnson had originally hoped the course would be open by the fall of 2013, but says wild hogs started tearing up the ground, causing delays.
"About every acre we would get prepped, a quarter of it that afternoon would get destroyed by hogs."

Johnson says the hogs causing trouble were caught and are no longer an issue, and that the new target date for the opening is around May 1.
"We've got a lot more work to do... we just want to make sure when this thing opens that it's a premiere golf course."

May 1 is just a tentative target date for the opening. Johnson says work on the irrigation system still needs to be completed and the grass needs to be fertilized once the weather warms up.

Johnson says they plan to host a two-day invitational tournament for the grand opening.
