DPS identifies victim in fatal Highway 87 accident

A spokesperson for the Department of Public Safety has released the name of a man who died in an accident on Highway 87 Monday afternoon.

The victim is identified as Cecil Williams, 75, of Call, Texas.

Trooper Stephanie Davis said the accident happened just after 3 p.m. as Williams was driving a 2004 Chevrolet truck northbound on Highway 87 near FM 2829 in Newton County. A 2012 Jeep SUV, driven by Cherie Trahan, 50, of Orange, was traveling southbound on Highway 87. Williams' Chevrolet crossed the center line into the southbound traffic lane and struck the 2012 Jeep.

Williams was pronounced dead at the scene by Newton County Precinct 1 Justice of the Peace Judge A. J. Satterwhite.

Trahan was taken to Christus Hospital St. Elizabeth with unknown injuries. A passenger in the Jeep was not injured.

Trooper Davis said all occupants were wearing seat belts.

At this time, Troopers are still investigating the reason why Williams crossed over the center dividing line.

Trooper Davis said further details will be released as it becomes available.
