Sonny the Birdman soars to the national stage with his birds

Posted: Updated:

Coming from a family that breeds birds, Sonny "the Birdman" Carlin has spent 15 to 20 years training exotic birds to perform unique tricks.

Traveling the country performing theatrical shows and making appearances at theme parks, his latest gig may be the best yet.

He earned a spot last season on the ABC show "America's Got Talent."

His website caught the eye of the show's producers.

"The lady called me. Her name was Renee and she said 'Sonny, this is Renee with America's Got Talent. We saw your videos on your website and we'd like for you to come be on our show.'  She said 'I know you've got talent or I wouldn't waste my time," said Sonny the Birdman.

He auditioned and made the show with an act he worked hard on perfecting.

"I had a bird riding the unicycle, carrying the American flag, carrying the flaming torch across high wire and bicycle, then a bird free flying into audience," he said.

Practicing along with taping took it's toll.

"They were doing two days of taping and I told the lady 'Man, I'm getting burned out' and she said 'Honey, this is Hollywood," he said.

Sonny the Birdman and his birds got the nod from two judge's; but not from Howie.

But, this show wasn't their final bow.

Sonny and his birds are hoping to soar onto the show again this upcoming season in hopes of getting a "yes" vote from all three judges and making it to the finale.
