$1 million bond set for man charged in toddler's death

A Winnie man is in the Chambers County Jail charged in the death of his two-year-old step-daughter.

Sheriff Brian Hawthorne said Kristopher James Redd, 23, is charged with Capital Murder.  His bond has been set at $1 million.

Sheriff Hawthorne says at 9:15 a.m. Sunday deputies were dispatched to the 200 block of West Elm Street in Winnie for a medical call.  When deputies arrived Redd had already left the scene and Emergency Medical Services technicians were trying to revive the toddler, according to a press release.

The two-year-old was taken to the Winnie Community Hospital where doctor's attempts to revive her were unsuccessful.

The Sheriff's Office said medical staff reported signs of previous abuse. Deputies located Redd, questioned him and he was then charged with murder.

Another child who was at the residence has been placed in protective custody.

Sheriff Hawthorne says the investigation is ongoing and more charges may be filed.
