Lady Cards win streak ends

Posted: Updated:

HAMMOND, La. –Dominique Edwards' sixth double-double of the season went for naught as the Lamar Lady Cardinals saw their four-game winning streak come to an end in a 67-62 loss at Southeastern Louisiana in a Southland Conference women's basketball game on Saturday.

Edwards had a career-high 25 points to go along with 12 rebounds, but the Lady Cardinals struggled to find their rhythm on offense throughout the day. Lamar (9-8 overall, 4-2 Southland) shot just 34.7 percent (25-of-72) from the field, including 23.1 percent (6-of-26) from 3-point range.

"We missed too many open looks today," Lamar coach Robin Harmony said. "We certainly had our chances."

Southeastern Louisiana (4-13, 3-2) shot a sizzling 55.6 percent (15-of-27) from the field in the second half to rally from a 37-33 halftime deficit. Aja Gibson had 10 of her team-high 16 points in the second half for the Lady Lions.

"We didn't get the stops when we needed to," Harmony said. "We have to learn from this."

Shauna Long had 15 points for Lamar. Gibson and Nanna Pool registered double-doubles for Southeastern Louisiana. Gibson had a game-high 14 rebounds to go with her 16 points, while Pool had 12 points and 13 rebounds.

Lamar ends its four-game road swing next week with contests against Southland Conference newcomers Abilene Christian and Incarnate Word. The Lady Cardinals are at Abilene Christian at 5:30 p.m. Thursday and at Incarnate Word at 2 p.m. Jan.25. The Abilene Christian game will air live on www.LamarCardinals.com. The Incarnate Word contest will be carried on KLVI (AM 560) and simulcast on www.LamarCardinals.com.

Lamar's next home game is 5:30 p.m. Jan. 30 vs. Houston Baptist.
