Posted: Updated:

NEW ORLEANS –Freshman Kiandra Bower registered her first career double-double to lead the Lamar Lady Cardinals to a convincing 80-53 win over the University of New Orleans in a Southland Conference women's basketball game Thursday evening.

Bowers had career highs of 17 points and 10 rebounds as the Lady Cardinals (9-7 overall, 4-1 Southland) ran their winning streak to four games.

"Kiandra was unstoppable tonight," Lamar coach Robin Harmony said. "She struggled in the past few games, so she needed this for her confidence."

Gia Ayers had game highs of 19 points and seven assists for Lamar, while Dominique Edwards had 17 points and JaMeisha Edwards added 11 points in the win.

New Orleans (0-16, 0-5) stayed close in the early going, holding a 14-12 with 14:48 remaining in the first half, but Ayers had eight points in an ensuing 13-2 Lamar run as the Lady Cardinals took control for good.

"We allowed them to come at us early," Harmony said. "I was a little disappointed in that, but they had nothing to lose. We stayed with our game. Any time you come away with a win on the road, it's good."

Octavia Wilson led the Privateers with 11 points. Raven Coleman had 10 rebounds for UNO.

The Lamar defense forced 26 turnovers, totaling 16 steals in the process. JaMeisha Edwards had a career-high five steals for Lamar.

All 13 players saw action for Lamar, with Micarah Malone making her collegiate debut, playing five minutes.

"It was good that some of our reserves got some playing time," Harmony said.

Lamar returns to action at 2 p.m. Saturday with a Southland Conference game at Southeastern Louisiana, That game will air live on KLVI (AM 560) and will be simulcast on www.LamarCardinals.com.
