PAISD teacher investigated after accused of pulling student's hair

PORT ARTHUR -

The Port Arthur Independent School District is investigating an incident where a parent is accusing a teacher of pulling her child's hair and forcefully twisting her wrist in a violent way.

Maria Garza's daughter is in fifth grade at Travis Elementary. She says her daughter's class was playing a game when the teacher asked her daughter, Giovanna, to sit down.

Garza says when her daughter sat down,  the teacher grabbed her by the hair and tried to turn her around by her hair.

"She was sitting down. The coach went and grabbed her by the right side of her hair and tried to turn her around the grabbed her wrist and had twisted it also," said Garza.

The incident was caught on tape. But, the school won't release the video while it's under investigation.

Garza has tried viewing the video but the district is not letting her see it because of a Privacy Act; meaning minors are on the tape.

Superintendent Dr. Mark Porterie says the district is investigating and will take action if the teacher was in fact forceful with Giovanna.

"This is not something we condone. We are going to investigate it and we are going to follow the policy," said Porterie.

Porterie tells 12News that if something did happen, it's not a reflection of the district but would be an isolated incident where a bad decision was made.

Garza says she has contacted police and is filing charges against the teacher.

The teacher's name is not being released at this time.
