A Beaumont ISD board member describes a grim financial forecast for the district

Posted: Updated:

It has been a week since the U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of Texas Malcolm Bales announced the indictment of two top Beaumont Independent School District officers. The two are charged with stealing over $4 million from the school district.

A school board member Wednesday said the lack of oversight that led to the alleged theft is also to blame for a $7 million BISD deficit for the year.

BISD Trustee Tom Neild said the only solution to the district's financial crisis is to stop the spending now.

"I can't tell you how much we would save from all our catering and food bills that we have in our district, cut out all travel, cut out conferences, let's stop right now," said Neild.

Neild said that for years the district spent money however officials wanted. He believes their thought process was they have plenty of it and there were no checks and balances.

Neild said the district's $3 million deficit grown bigger this year.

The district is set to lose an additional $4 million as a result of a refund to an industrial taxpayer because the industry's property was reappraised. Neild believes the district could have been better prepared financially to handle that.

Neild said, "As long as we've been looking into this, we still don't know what our balances are."
