Proposed change to make Rogers Park safe, family friendly

Posted: Updated:

Beaumont City Councilman Mike Getz said he is aiming to make Rogers Park a safer and more family friendly area by lowering the basketball goals.

The proposal comes after a shooting that happened at the park in December.  A Beaumont Police spokesperson said two men approached two others playing basketball.  A verbal argument escalated into a fist fight and afterwards one of the basketball players was shot in the leg.

Getz said there is also a lot of profanity during games on the basketball court.  It's a problem the councilman said he's heard while playing on the nearby tennis courts.

"Well sometimes it gets to that. It's basketball.  You got that in the NBA, arguing here and there. But not enough to run your family off," Ervin Harris, a frequent basketball player at Rogers Park, said.

An arrest was made in the December shooting. Getz told 12News that council is still waiting to learn if the shooting was an isolated incident before coming to a decision on the goals.
