Body discovered in Lumberton house fire

A Jefferson County forensic pathologist is trying to positively identify a body discovered in a house fire in Lumberton. Shortly before 2:30a.m. Saturday the Lumberton Fire Department responded to a fully involved house fire on Taft Avenue off Walton Road. After the fire was extinguished, firefighters found a body inside the house. 

Neighbors tell 12 News a middle aged woman lives alone in the house. However, Lumberton Police Chief Danny Sullins says the body is completely unrecognizable. The body was taken to the Jefferson County forensic pathologist for examination. 

The Lumberton Fire Department, Lumberton Police Department, and the state Fire Marshall's Office are  investigating the fire. 

No other surrounding buildings were impacted by the fire.
