Groves man remains critical after doused in gasoline and set on fire

Posted: Updated:

Nederland police are close to wrapping up an investigation involving a man who was doused in gasoline and set on fire.

On Dec. 28, Zack Bailey, 29, of Groves was working on a truck at a friend's house on Avenue G in Nederland.

Police say gasoline was somehow poured on him and he was set on fire.

Cheryl French, Bailey's aunt, said Bailey rolled around in the grass and that an alert neighbor then put the fire out by pouring water on him from a water hose.

Bailey was rushed to UTMB in Galveston by medical helicopter with burns to 75-percent of his body. He was on life support for four days. French told 12News Bailey has undergone three surgeries.

He remains at UTMB in critical condition but is now able to talk.

"Monday, I went over to Galveston and met with Zack and was able to get a statement from him with the events that took place," said Detective Corey Mendoza with the Nederland Police Department.

French believes Bailey was intentionally set on fire.

"I can't believe a kid would do this to another kid. He's got a long road ahead of him," said French.

Nederland police say they are still investigating if it was accidental or intentional. If it was intentional, the person responsible would be charged with Aggravated Assault with a Deadly Weapon, a second degree felony. That charge could land someone up to 20 years in prison.
